 Where do footballs come from?

We all like to play and watch football but how many of us have stopped to think about where the footballs we are kicking around have come from?

70% of the world’s hand stitched footballs are made in Sialkot in Pakistan – it is time-consuming, intricate work and an experienced stitcher can make five footballs a day.

Find out more about how footballs are made in the film from the Fairtrade Foundation below, which takes you to Pakistan to show you the production process first-hand, hearing from the stitchers and workers who make the footballs that you might kick around in your garden.

Fairtrade

You might have seen the FAIRTRADE Mark on items you buy in the supermarket like bananas or chocolate but I bet you didn’t know you can get Fairtrade footballs! When you do see the Mark you know that the people who have grown or made that item get a fair deal – the Fairtrade Minimum Price acts as a safety net when market prices drop and the Fairtrade Premium is the extra sum of money that farmers and workers receive to invest in business or community projects of their choice.
