All About Snowboarding
What is snowboarding?
Snowboarding is a winter snowsport in which snowboarders slide downhill, sideways with their feet fixed to a board. It is an awesome mix of skiing, surfing and skateboarding. There are lots of different aspects of snowboarding, such as learning jumps and tricks often similar to those done by skateboarders. Other snowboarders enjoy zooming down the pistes as fast as possible or hiking up mountains to ride deep, fresh snow far away from the ski resorts, deep in the middle of nature.
Is it easy to learn?
Learning to snowboard is so much fun and with the support of a great instructor you will find your balance in no time. Your instructor will help you slowly build up your skills and build confidence on your snowboard. Before you know it, you will be learning basic freestyle tricks such as tail presses and ollies.
Skiing vs snowboarding
You do not need to learn to ski before learning to snowboard, it is a completely different sport altogether. Snowboard boots are comfier and easier to walk in compared to ski boots which is a great bonus!
Right from the first time you strap on a board and slide down a slope for the first time, you get a great feeling of freedom on a snowboard. This feeling just gets better and better as you progress and are soon able to whizz down the slopes flying over jumps as you go.
Already snowboard – what more is there to learn?
Once you can link your turns you can progress onto steeper slopes and to snowboarding off piste, which is so much fun especially when there is fresh powder snow (just watch out you don’t get stuck!). Most resorts have snowparks with jumps, rails, boxes and other features to do tricks on. There is an endless number of tricks to learn involving spins, grabs & presses.
Where can I learn to snowboard?
Morzine / Avoriaz in the French alps is a great place to learn, with nice easy slopes to start on and lots of fun runs through the trees. Once you can snowboard there is an awesome snowpark in Avoriaz called the lil’ Stash which is so much fun, there is even a huge treehouse hidden in the forest.
