Canoeing

The British team achieved their best ever performance at September's 2023 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships. The Championships took place at the Lee Valley White Water Centre and saw the British team finish with eight medals in total - five gold, two silver and one bronze.

 
 

Notable achievements came from Kimberley Woods and Joe Clarke. Woods won four medals - two gold, one silver and one bronze - and Clarke has now won every men’s kayak cross world title since its introduction in 2021!

British team medal tally:

Gold (5): Women’s canoe team, Mallory Franklin [Women’s canoe], Joe Clarke [Men’s kayak, Men’s kayak cross], Kimberley Woods [Women’s kayak cross]

Silver (2): Men’s canoe team, Kimberley Woods [Women’s canoe]

Bronze (1): Women’s kayak team

 
 

#ShePaddles

Also, during the championships, more than 50 women attended British Canoeing’s #ShePaddles conference to help get more women and girls into paddlesports. 

At the conference, #ShePaddles ambassadors led discussions about the barriers to women’s participation in paddlesports, and other issues they face.

Sport England has released statistics that show there are 2 million fewer women regularly involved in sport than men, so this conference was to try to raise participation by really getting to know what the barriers are. 

#ShePaddles is using ambassadors and champion clubs to raise awareness and make participation as easy as possible.
