Athletics
Athletics will feature highly at the Tokyo Olympic Games in the summer and this month there are several indoor events taking place in Glasgow. The Muller Indoor Grand Prix, Glasgow will be live on BBC1 on Saturday 15th February from 1:15pm – 4:30pm. This is great news for those of you who want to see top athletes in action. Here’s some highlights from last year’s event in Birmingham.
The SPAR British Athletics Indoor Championships takes place the following weekend, 22-23 Feb.
As it is an indoor meeting there won’t be any 100m or steeplechase races. The indoor equivalent of the 100m is the 60m, with the 3000m the equivalent of the steeplechase, while relays will only be in the form of the Club:Connect races, which will be 4x200m from U13 – U20 level. This is footage of the U15 Boys competing in Birmingham and the U17 girls.
New to Athletics?
For those just starting in the sport, British Athletics has told us there is the Street2Stadium programme in London and Birmingham, for those of you aged 12-18.
Otherwise, they advise anyone interested in starting in the sport to use the club finder and contact their Home Member Federation (England Athletics, Scottish Athletics, Welsh Athletics and Athletics Northern Ireland) to find the club best suited to them, depending on the event you wish to take part in and its location.
Ready for the next level?
If you are already an experienced athlete, they have told us that there are structured pathways in place for athletes, again from their Home Member Federation, that will look to streamline athletes into progression onto the British Athletics Olympic and Paralympic Futures Programmes, details of which are here.
Let’s hear from the professionals.
Thanks to the Mintridge Foundation – an incredible charity that helps young people through the power of sport, we asked Iona Lake to give you some advice on her event, steeplechase.
What age can you start competing in steeplechase?
You can begin competing in the steeplechase at U17, at this age it is just 2k. Then at U20 you can do the full distance of 3k Steeplechase.
How do you know it's an event to try?
If you love running but find endurance events a little boring on the track then this is a perfect event to try! Or, if you like hurdling but you are better at longer distances.
Which events are best to lead on to steeplechase?
As long as you enjoy running this event is ideal! It is an endurance event, but with the added element of strength and power for clearing the barriers and water jumps.
