Cheerleading
Did you know that Cheer, as it's known, is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK and has recently been granted Olympic status by the IOC?!
There isn't currently a club finder for cheerleading but all the contact details for the National Governing bodies for Wales/Scotland/ England and Northern Ireland can be found at www.sportcheerengland.org/links
We spoke to the team at Swindon Lightning Cheerleading to find out more about the sport and if you live nearby they'd love you to come along to one of their classes in September!
About the sport
Competitive Allstar cheerleading has routines which are 2 minutes and 30seconds which include gymnastics and acrobatics all perfectly choreographed to the music. The routines consist of adrenaline rushing stunts, skilful tumble passes, dynamic connecting pyramids, powerful jumps and the sassiest and most energetic dance you’ll see on a stage!
Why people love it
The teamwork and trust, the thrill of a new stunt and tumble, the inclusivity and positivity of athletes supporting each other to be their best. Being a member of a team instils a deep sense of pride, from the uniforms, the music, the joy of hitting zero (a perfect run with zero deductions from the judges) and receiving positive feedback from judges at competitions all keep young girls and boys, teens and adults coming back for more!
Cheer has been a lifeline for so many of our athletes both before COVID and during. Cheer is where they feel safe, where they have fun and where they fulfil their potential! It’s where athletes can push their comfort zones and reveal the hidden talent they have through hard work, and dedication to both their training and teammates.
