Cricket
With the recent announcement that all domestic cricket is on hold until 1st August we know that a number of our readers will be missing their favourite summer sport. So in this month’s article we are letting you know about a new cricket app and #dice cricket!
Dynamos
If you’re aged 8-11 have you heard of the new Dynamos Cricket app that has been launched by the ECB for your age group?
It’s part of the Dynamos Cricket programme which is an 8 week programme which should be taking place in cricket clubs across the country, a follow on from the All Stars programme.
As we can’t take part in cricket as usual you can instead learn lots of skills using the app including batting, bowling and fielding. There are also skills videos and interactive quizzes.
You can download the new Dynamos Cricket app for free on iOS and Android. For more information and updates on the programme visit www.dynamoscricket.co.uk.
DICE CRICKET
We spoke to Patrick Latham and Wesley Durston of A Leading Edge about how, with the help of Cricket World, they have been helping to save summer cricket for so many with their fabulous dice cricket game that you can play at home with your family or even over video calls with friends!
With their virtual cricket they have produced scores and results for all the County Cricket Championship matches in divisions 1 and 2.
On 2nd and 4th June the first ever International dice cricket series is to be played between India and Pakistan!
How are they doing this?
Wes and Patrick have developed a way of playing out 4 day county matches using a single dice.
“The rules come from a game my Granddad taught me and played with me for hours when I was very young”, says Patrick. “He used a compass to make holes on the sides of a six sided pencil, with 1 hole meaning 1 run, 2 holes for 2, 3 for 3, 4 and 6. The side with 5 holes was out and when you rolled the pencil, the side showing up was the outcome of the delivery. We got quite lost in it and played as Botham, Willis, Holding and all the great players of the time”.

DICE CRICKET FOR SCHOOLS
Wesley and Patrick have been receiving requests to run matches for other teams and clubs in the recent weeks and A Leading Edge ran the first ever inter-school Dice Cricket match between Uppingham and Oakham Schools recently and broadcast the game live over Twitter.
Since then, Trent College, Nottingham requested a Possibles v Probables ‘trial’ game for their 1st XI.
How did they play?
“They had set up a Zoom call for the boys so that they were all following during the game which we played live. It was a really close game, and as the game had thrown up various scenarios and events they could use them for coaching points, getting the boys to interact with each other about the situation. What would they do in real life in the same situation? Who should bowl? Where should they bowl? How would the game plan of the batters change and what might they do in order to reach the target”.
House Cricket
“We have had some requests about house sport from schools, and it is clear that the students need something a bit different as a welcome distraction from the online lessons which can take their toll on staff and students alike. The children are missing the competition and enjoyment of school sport. Whilst what we offer is no replacement for the real thing, in this current situation, where young people can still get behind their school or house in cricket, tennis or football matches played with a dice there is still a chance that we can offer something by way of sport this summer”.
Play Dice Cricket
Dice Cricket is one of 11 dice games to appear in A Leading Edge’s book Dice Sports which can be found on Amazon for £9.99. They have not only updated the rules for cricket, but added rugby, snooker, hockey, football, golf, basketball, tennis & pool as sports that can be played using a single six sided dice.
