Cycling
The end of April saw some fantastic results for GB Cycling at the UCI Track Nations Cup in Glasgow. The top highlights are below as well as the lowdown on one of the biggest races - the Omnium!
Bronze
Charlie Tanfield won Bronze in the individual pursuit thanking the support of the home crowd for helping him along.
“I got the cheers setting off which was nice. It’s always good to hear that and it gees you up a bit more. I’m really happy with that because I got a medal today and I didn’t come in with those expectations. The crowd definitely helped."
Silver
Olympic medalist Josie Knight also won Bronze in the Individual Pursuit as well as Silver in the Women's Team Pursuit. Having suffered a broken elbow five weeks before, she hadn't even expected to be able to compete!
Gold
On the final night in Glasgow, Ollie Wood took Gold in the Omnium!
“I got off to a good start and it’s been very quickfire, all within a few hours, so it’s made it tough but that’s the omnium. You have to keep getting up there and see where you are for the points race at the end."
The Omnium is a 4 race event with the events as follows: Scratch, Tempo, Elimination and Points.
Scratch: A straightforward race - first to get to the finish, wins.
Tempo: 10 km race (40 laps), after the first 5 laps the winner earns a point per lap. Lapping the field earns 20 points. The winner is the one with the most points. These don't get added to the Omnium score but count for where the rider is placed in the next race.
Elimination: Every 2 laps, the cyclist who is coming last is eliminated.
Points: 25 km, 100 lap race, gaining points for sprints along the way and lapping.
As you can imagine, it’s an incredibly tough event! Huge congratulations to all the cyclists.
