Fun in the French Alps
Snowy skies, the sound of crunching under our heels, the smell of crepes wafting through the streets and the glitter of twinkling Christmas lights. It must be winter time in Morzine! Nestled at the very heart of the Portes du Soleil, Morzine is the perfect destination to get outdoors and have fun in the mountains this winter!
Aside from endless snowball fights, building snowmen and making snow angels, there are an abundance of activities to get involved with on and off the mountain in the winter time. Read on to find out about some of our favourites…
Skiing and Snowboarding
Whether you choose skis or a snowboard this popular activity is the perfect way to make friends, explore the mountain and have tons of fun! We recommend you book some ski lessons with a group that have a similar ability to get you on your way or improve your technique. We look forward to seeing you shredding the slopes in no time at all!
Snowbiking
You may have already heard of mountain biking, a well known summer activity. Here in Morzine, we love it so much that we’ve also turned it into a winter sport! How you may be wondering? Well, it’s actually pretty simple! Snowbiking consists of riding selected trails of Morzine, Avoriaz and Les Gets in the same way you would in summer. Except this time.. it’s on snow! Unfortunately snow bikes can’t be taken on the lifts but a guide can easily show you where to go and snow-specific bikes come with an electric motor to help you on your way. They also have extra wide tyres to stop you slipping on the snow.
Thanks to the progression of e-bike technology this adrenaline filled activity is available to absolutely anyone. Again, an instructor is advised for first timers… safety first!
Tobogganing
A toboggan race is one of the best ways to have fun together as a family or a group of friends. Here in Morzine you can head up the mountain after the slopes have closed for the day, hop on your toboggan and slide your way down the piste whilst watching the twinkling lights of town below. The question is… who is going to win?
Husky Sledding and Horse-drawn Sleigh Rides
Horse-drawn sleigh rides are a fun way to get around, especially if you’re visiting the mountains during the build-up to Christmas. Trot around Morzine itself or the pedestrian resort of Avoriaz and get in the true festive spirit. For a bit more adventure, you can be in charge of your own sledge and a team of excitable husky dogs as you follow a guide through the forest paths. It’s great fun but certainly not for the faint-hearted! Be prepared for a pretty tough work out and a completely unique experience.
Snowmobiling
Snowmobiling is a fun, fast, exhilarating activity. Available each evening in Morzine & Avoriaz from 5.30pm to midnight, you’ll have the mountains to yourselves as you explore the stunning landscape in a completely new way. If you’re feeling adventurous you can drive your own snowmobile but if you’d rather take a back seat then that’s fine too. Let a guide do the hard work while you soak in your surroundings and enjoy the experience.
Paragliding
Take in the snowy peaks and glorious scenery from a different point of view, from the sky! Paragliding (known as parapenting in France) is the most common way to experience the Alps from above and it’s accessible for everyone with both tandem and solo flights available. If you’ve never tried it before then Morzine is the perfect place to start with views that will take your breath away.
Ice Skating
Morzine’s outdoor ice rink is renowned for its music, lights and guaranteed fun for all the family. Located right in the centre of town, the ice rink is open all day and every evening during the winter.
If you’d prefer to swap your figure skates for ice hockey boots then you could also head down to the larger indoor ice rink and practise shooting some pucks. It’s open to the public every week day and you can also catch the Morzine Pengouins in action most Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the week!
The Torchlight Descent and Fireworks
The torchlit descent is a MUST SEE attraction here in Morzine. Every Tuesday the ESF snowsports school ski down the Pleney with flaming torches in hand to create a line of fire that weaves towards the bottom of the slopes, into the town.
Following the decedent, impressive fireworks and FREE hot chocolate and vin chaud (for the adults) can be enjoyed at the bottom of the Pleney slope. This event is a firm favourite of ours and one we recommend to everyone!
Winter Events
Don’t miss out on the many winter events taking place in and around Morzine this winter. From meeting Santa and exploring the enchanted Christmas village to ice treasure hunts and a fantastic creatures parade… there’s something to enjoy for all ages! One of our favourite all year round activities in Les Gets is the ‘Alta Lumina’ enchanted night walk. Yes, it’s really as exciting as it sounds! To find out about events taking place during your stay with us, simply just ask and we’ll let you know what’s happening.
And that’s not all… Aside from extreme snowsports and gliding through the air, there are many other ways to make the most of your time in the mountains. Why not visit the Christmas market or pamper yourself at the spa (definitely one for the mums)! And when staying in one of our cosy chalets you can take full advantage of the games room and even a hot tub! One of our favourite things to do is simply to snuggle up in front of the warm crackling fire with a hot chocolate after a long day full of adventure. You’ll certainly need your energy for another exciting day ahead!
