The Laver Cup - Roger Federer Retires from Tennis

On the last weekend in September, tennis greats joined together to play in the Laver Cup at London’s O2 Arena.

 
 

Named after the famous Australian former tennis player Rod Laver, Team Europe played Team World in an exciting and also emotional competition that saw Roger Federer retire from tennis. 

 
 

‘Team Europe’, Captained by legend Bjorn Bourg, included Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray as well as Casper Ruud, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Cameron Norrie and Metteo Berrettini. However, they were beaten by John McEnroe’s ‘Team World’ of Alex de Minaur, Taylor Fritz, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Diego Schwartzman, Frances Tiafoe, Jack Sock and Tommy Paul.  

 
 

On the Friday evening, Federer and Nadal partnered for a doubles match that concluded with Federer being surrounded by family, friends and a packed stadium including Ellie Goulding who sang him into retirement and Rod Laver himself. He then played for the last time on Sunday’s final day of the event.

 
 

Ball Kids

24 young people aged between 12-16 were chosen from over 400 applicants after trials to be ball kids for the Cup. This meant that they had the incredible opportunity to be on court throughout the competition.

Star Spectators

Famous tennis fans filled the stands including JK Rowling, Hugh Grant, Michael McIntyre, Bear Grylls and Reuben Loftus-Cheek. In total, 96,154 people attended.
