They compete across the world and can earn staggering amounts of money for the big competitions. Unsurprisingly, snooker is fast growing in popularity and has a quickly developing junior section.

Never played snooker before?

Snooker is played on a snooker table and the aim of the game is to ‘pot’ (snooker lingo) the different coloured balls into the pockets. You always hit the white ball first using a snooker cue and aim to hit another ball with the white so that it falls into a pocket. You must pot a red ball before you can move on to a colour. There are 15 red balls and they are worth 1 point each. You can choose any colour to pot after a red and they have different points depending on the colour.

  • Yellow is 2

  • Green 3

  • Brown 4

  • Blue 5

  • Pink 6

  • Black 7

If there are red balls still on the table, the coloured balls are replaced back on to the table after they have gone into a pocket.

Once all the red balls are in the pockets you then try to pot the colours but in the order of their value as above. So yellow, green, brown, blue, pink then black.

It remains your turn all the time you are potting the balls. If you miss then it is your opponents turn or they can choose to let you take another turn.

Want to give snooker a go?

There is a national official club finder!  https://clubfinder.epsb.co.uk/

All clubs have equipment you can borrow but the WPBSA (World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association), particularly recommend choosing a ‘147 Club’, which are the green icons on the map.  These clubs meet their minimum standards for welfare and safeguarding.
