Tchoukball
Pronounced ‘chook-ball’
What is Tchoukball?
Tchoukball is a fast-paced, team sport that can be played indoors or on the beach.
Tchoukball is different to other team sports because it is non-contact and you attack and defend at both ends of the court!
Invented to prevent injuries, tchoukball is easy to pick up with the main skills of throwing, catching and shooting the ball at the net.
Players wear knee pads which allows them to slide, or even dive, to catch the ball. They do this to stop the opposition from scoring a point after they have shot the ball.
Tchoukball is played 7-a-side and has between 3-5 substitutions with games lasting 3 x 15 minute thirds. Beach tchoukball is played on a smaller pitch and is 5-a-side.
We have GB squads in for both the men and women’s teams but more importantly the youth teams including U18. U15 & U12 for both girls’ and boys’ teams!
What are the basic rules?
Tchoukball is really easy to learn as you can transfer your skills from a range of sports such as netball, cricket, handball and volleyball.
Tchoukball is played by a “rule of three”: You have up to 3 seconds, 3 steps and 3 passes with the ball before it is shot at a frame.
To take a shot you have to stand or jump from outside the ‘D’. When a ball is shot at the net, the defending team will be on its knees around the ‘D’ trying to catch the rebounding ball. To score a point the ball must touch the floor outside the ‘D’ and land inside the court.
The shooter's aim is to place the ball away from the defenders. The defender’s aim is to place themselves in the way of the ball and catch it. Have a look at the following videos to show the best attack and defensive plays with some of the best European youth teams.
