Team Brave

Hola! I'm Becca, I'm the founder of Team Brave, and we're delighted to be partnering with bsporty magazine to bring you a big boost of confidence!

Over the next few months we'll help you with some top tips for feeling great, skills that can enhance your self-esteem, ways to improve your resilience, and overall ideas to have fun and feel happier!

Team Brave has a very simple motto that I think we can all agree on:

-be kind

-be yourself

-be brave

If we can all do those three things as much as possible- we'll make the world better, friendlier and happier. You can do it!

Sport has an amazing power to unite people together, bring peace, teach values, and we fully believe in its incredible power of improving our mental health (as well as our physical health).

Team Brave harnesses sport and uses it to help everyone to feel better!

Doing sport and physical activity is a brilliant way to stay fit and healthy. Ask any sports person, athlete or player- and they'll agree that sport has been a massive part of their lives- and has taken them to amazing places, given them really cool opportunities, and helped them to make friends for life.

In addition, sport is proven (by scientists) to have so many awesome benefits on our mental health; how happy we feel, how we manage our emotions, and how we channel our energy into something positive! It can teach us to be resilient, mentally strong, motivated athletes, great team players, and most importantly; kind, friendly, happy people.

Think about a sport that you love doing....how do you feel after you've played? How does it feel to do it together with your friends?

If it's an individual sport- how do you feel when you achieve one of your goals, learn new skills, or just get out in the fresh air and move?

Hopefully you feel awesome!

"Confidence" can be defined as the trust someone has in themselves and their own abilities and decision making. It's very similar to "self-esteem"- which is someone's view of their self-worth. Both are really important.

Confidence is absolutely key to feeling happy, having great relationships with other people, doing well at school, in your future job, within sport- and in the wider world.

At Team Brave we really believe in the importance of helping everyone to feel confident. How do you think we do that?

Firstly- we make sure that the environment that we coach in is really friendly, welcoming, inclusive and safe. We want everyone to feel comfortable and free to express themselves.

Secondly- we encourage everybody to take risks, be creative and have fun! In psychology there are two spectrums of motivation: people who are trying to avoid failure (Need to Avoid Failure = NAF) and those who are trying to achieve success (Need to Achieve = NAch). We find that if we focus more upon trying to step out of our comfort zones, try something challenging and thereby improve our skills- we can build confidence and self-esteem.

Thirdly- we foster a really strong team atmosphere; in which everyone feels part of a community and has a chance to make friends and feel supported.

We all go through difficult, sad, stressful times throughout our lives- but if you have a strong "support network" of friends to help you through any adversity, care about you and people to make you smile- it makes any challenge a lot easier to take on!

There's loads more techniques and ideas that we have for boosting your confidence- so I'll tell you all about them in the next few issues of the bsporty magazine.

In the meantime- enjoy and have a go at these skills videos, and focus on practicing and improving as a player / athlete, which will help your team- and also your success both within sport, and outside of sport.
