Tenpin Bowling Interview with Verity Crawley
When did you first try bowling and was it just for fun?
I was 5 years old when my parents signed my brother and I up for the local Youth Bowling Club (YBC). He had just attended a birthday party at our local bowling centre and loved it. The YBC was happening at the same time and as far as I am aware, my parents spoke with some of the officials and signed us up to try!
What did you first enjoy about it?
It’s hard to say because I don’t exactly remember how or why I became obsessed with the sport. I do know that, I truly enjoyed the competition and the thrill of knocking down the pins.
How did that enjoyment progress to playing seriously?
I was fortunate to travel all around the UK and compete in youth events. It was from there that I was invited to a Junior training academy which really propelled my bowling. I was selected to represent Team England at the United World Games in Vienna, when I was just 12 years old. That desire to want to represent my country at the highest level, motivated me to work hard.
How did you end up playing in America?
In 2012 I competed for Team England at the European Youth Championships. I had a very successful performance, shooting 300, winning a gold medal in the singles event, a bronze in team and a bronze in all events. From there, I was offered a scholarship to study and bowl in the US. Moving to the US wasn’t my initial plan, however I felt like the opportunity was too big to turn down.
Is bowling a more well known sport there?
I believe so. Of course there are a lot more people, however the main professional events take place there. Thus more TV coverage of the sport, creating more awareness. A lot of bowling centres have large leagues, as well as youth programs. There are even high school competitions.
Where have you travelled to to compete?
Where to start? I’ve been to a whole range of places from Denmark to Hong Kong, to nearly 30 US states.
Which has been your favourite competition so far?
That’s a tough one! I won my first professional title this year at the 2021 PWBA Greater Nashville Open, so that one will always hold a special place in my heart. Alongside the EYC in Denmark in 2012, where my family watched me roll my first perfect game and win three medals for England.
What's your current ranking?
I’m currently ranked 3rd in the Professional Woman’s Bowling Association, with three events left this year.
Are you now based in the UK?
I am currently travelling back and forth between the UK and America. I feel very lucky to be able to call both places home!
What are your ambitions in the sport?
To create more awareness of the sport and inspire people to follow their passion. As for my own bowling, I play for the incredible experiences I have on the lanes, my dreams are in the playing, performing with passion and joy.
Do you enjoy other sports?
I honestly do not partake in many other sports. I enjoy watching every now and then as well as following athletes through social media.
What would be your advice to children who enjoy bowling for fun?
To keep having fun! If bowling really is something that gives you great enjoyment, then keep at it and know that you can make a career out of it!
How do they find out information on junior leagues and teams?
UK: https://btba.org.uk/youth-bowling-england/
US: https://www.bowl.com/usabowling/
As a coach too, what are your top bowling tips?
It’s never over until the last ball is thrown!
The beginning of your approach dictates a lot. If the beginning is off, the end will be off.
Remember to enjoy what you are doing and embrace every moment.
