Summer Sports

It's the summer term and hopefully the weather will warm up soon and the rain will reduce so we can all get involved in summer sports.

Here is our low down on what to try or how to get more involved. All links are to regulated activity providers.

1) Cricket

If you're avid readers of our magazine then you will know that we are big fans of cricket! It's a fantastic game for children and something you can all get involved with.

The ECB runs some fantastic junior programmes. All stars for those aged 5-8 and Dynamos for children 8-11 and if you visit https://www.ecb.co.uk/play you will find all the links you need to register for these programmes as well as other options like club cricket for 11 plus and disability cricket.

Girls, you can also take a look at ‘Girls Cricket Club’ https://girlscricketclub.com for inspiring clubs and programmes.

2) Athletics

Athletics tracks have been mown and marked and we love the athletics season because there is something for everyone.

Fast runners - there's the sprint races and relay.

Prefer longer distance running? There are races from 400-1500 metres  and beyond depending on your age.

There are also field events. Do you have a good arm and aim? Why not try javelin, discus or shot put? Great jumping skills? There's high jump and long jump, then for older children triple jump.

Loving athletics? Then all the information you need is on this link from finding a club to volunteering and more. https://www.britishathletics.org.uk/get-involved/

3) Tennis

Tennis is a wonderful sport to enjoy all year round but it is extra special in the summer, especially with so many incredible professional tennis events to watch such as Queen's and Wimbledon.

There are a number of options to get involved via the LTA and this link has all you need to know  https://www.lta.org.uk from starting tennis to competing. Simply follow the relevant link at the top of the page to 'play' or 'compete'. Each link has a section for disability tennis.

If you're a girl wanting to play then why not check out https://www.miss-hits.co.uk - Miss-Hits was set up by Judy Murray, mother to tennis stars Jamie and Andy Murray and a brilliant tennis player herself, to encourage more girls to play and it is a brilliant way to get involved in tennis.

4) Baseball and Softball

Again, we are huge fans of these sports and our magazine has lots of links to some fantastic articles - read the more recent one here.

The best way to get involved is to read that article or follow this link https://www.baseballsoftballuk.com

Click on the 'play' tab at the top of the page for lots of options for both sports.

5) Sailing/Windsurfing

This summer, why not get involved in some brilliant watersports?

Again, simply search by sport on this magazine for our previous articles to get inspired or visit

https://www.rya.org.uk for all you need to know from starting on the water to clubs and racing.

6) Surfing

We all dream of being able to surf! Well we do! There are so many options available.

The Wave in Bristol is a great place to start as it's not the real sea so can be more controlled! https://www.thewave.com

For sea surfing visit our friends at https://www.surfingengland.org for lots of options including adaptive surfing plus for girls, check out the incredible Wave Wahines https://wavewahines.co.uk

We hope you have a brilliant summer trying or developing your sports and let us know how you get on!

7) GOLF

We have some brilliant golf articles in bsporty and would encourage all of you to try this sport or look to progress your game by entering the many junior competitions on offer such as The Telegraph Junior Golf competition.

England Golf has an easy to follow website for whatever stage of golf you are at. Simply visit https://www.englandgolf.org and click on the ‘Play Golf’ tab at the top of the page for links to ‘Juniors into Golf’ or ‘Girls Golf Rocks’ and ‘Disabilty’ golf. You can also find links to volunteering and the Young Ambassadors on this page.
