Triathlon
The Commonwealth Games will get started in Birmingham later this month. So we thought we’d introduce you to one of the fun, fast paced sports that you’ll be able to catch on TV or live in Birmingham if you’re lucky enough to head to the Games.
Triathlon is a sport which combines three of the best known activities in one sport, meaning it’s open to absolutely everyone no matter your ability, age or experience. Take a look below to find out which activities are included.
Swim - Triathlon always starts with a swim – this can be in open water or in a swimming pool. The swim can be any stroke apart from backstroke.
Bike - The next step is to get on your bike. Any type of bike will do – and if you really want to mix things up, you could jump on a scooter instead and do your very own DIY tri.
Run - Finally, it is time for a bit of running (or speed walking if you’re a little tired)!
There are also other multi-sport events and combinations for you to try too so if you don’t fancy swimming or aren’t too confident on your wheels, we still have something for you. The two most common are aquathlons, which is a swim followed by a run and duathlon which is run-bike-run.
Active Skills for Life
Fancy getting involved from the comfort of your own home? Our Active Skills for Life Activity Hub has a range of videos made just for you to give the sport a whirl. Get ready to pretend to swim on your carpet or race the clock switching from one set of clothes to another – we promise you’ll love it and have loads of fun too!
Your local event
If an event is more your thing, head over to the GO TRI website and find one in your local area. There are a range of events for children and also family events too so feel free to rope in your parents, neighbours, older siblings or a family friend! We really mean it when we say this sport is for everyone!
Your local club
Clubs are a great way to meet new friends whilst improving your swimming, cycling and running skills. There are plenty of junior clubs to get involved with – head over to the British Triathlon club finder to seek out one in your local area.
The virtual world
And last, but by no means least, we wanted to let you in on a little secret. Have you heard of Pokemon Go? Can you imagine it in Swim, Bike, Run form? Well, look no further!
Around the time of the Commonwealth Games we will be launching our SBR app (SBR stands for Swim, Bike, Run btw!) which will be home to the Swim Bike Run Adventure! You’ll be sent on a quest to hunt down a range of characters as you wander around your local park, head out on a bike ride or just walk around your house.
Track down Splash, Dash and Gears along with their other friends as you go on a mission to collect as many characters as possible to unlock some pretty cool prizes – what’s not to love! Keep your eyes peeled for more updates on this – we can’t wait to have you involved!
