Windsurfing
It’s nearly the summer holidays and lots of you will be taking trips in the U.K. perhaps to the lakes or the sea.
Why not go windsurfing whilst you are there?
Windsurfing is an amazing sport that can help with so many important life skills such as confidence and independence as well as communication and coordination.
Windsurfing requires a combination of the skills you may have learnt sailing or surfing! You need to control the wind but also the water and your windsurf.
It requires strength and the RYA (the National Organisation that controls windsurfing activities) describe it as a ‘full body workout’.
The RYA has lots of incredible resources for young people to either start this sport or to develop their skills through the OnBoard programme. This link takes you directly to the OnBoard page which covers sailing as well and where you and your parents can search for a club near where you live or where you are going on holiday. https://www.rya.org.uk/programmes/onboard/parents-and-young-people/Pages/Get-Started.aspx
There’s also a number of youth windsurfing schemes where you can go from beginner to beyond Level 4 to Advanced. There is also Team 15 which is a windsurfing group specifically for those aged 15 and under. This link has all the information you need to find youth windsurfing and Team 15 in your region.

In our sailing article last year we introduced you to foiling and this is also possible on a windsurf!
They look as though they are flying!
As you know, we are keen at bsporty to make sure that when you try and love a new sport, you also learn how to look after the equipment properly.
So, if you’re out on the water this summer, have fun and always remember to visit an RYA approved club and instructor and wear a lifejacket!!
Also, check out our knot tying article for some important skills!
Thanks to the RYA for the videos in this article.
With thanks to RYA for the use of the videos in this article.
