Winter Olympics

The Winter Olympics begins in February 2022 in Beijing and the Winter Paralympics also takes place there in March 2022.

Winter Olympics

Between 4-20 February 2022 the best of the best will compete at the Winter Olympics. The IOC (International Olympic Committee) describe the sports as follows:

Alpine Skiing

Alpine skiing is one of the signature competitions at the Winter Olympics.

Biathlon

Biathlon combines the endurance and intensity of cross-country skiing with the precision and skill of rifle shooting.

Bobsleigh

In bobsleigh, athletes make timed runs down a narrow ice track in a specially designed sledge.

Cross-Country Skiing

Still used as a means of transportation today, cross-country skiing is one of the original Winter Olympic sports.

Curling

In curling, teams use brooms and specially designed shoes to slide granite stones across the ice towards a target.

Figure Skating

Figure skating, an elegant mix of art and sport, includes singles, pair skating and ice dance.

Freestyle Skiing

The various disciplines of freestyle skiing combine speed, showmanship, and extreme skill.

Ice Hockey

A fast-paced, full-contact team sport that always draws big crowds at the Olympic Games.

Luge

In luge, athletes must navigate an icy track at extreme speeds, all while riding feet first on a small sledge.

Nordic Combined

Nordic combined is made up of two separate sports: ski jumping and cross-country skiing.

Short Track Speed Skating

Short track races are full of strategy, bravery, and skill as competitors skate against one another in close quarters.

Skeleton

In skeleton, competitors ride head-first and prone on a sledge down an icy track at high speed.

Ski Jumping

Ski jumping sees athletes launch themselves from ramps to soar through the air, where distance (and style) are crucial.

Speed Skating

Speed skating evolved from a means of transportation across frozen lakes and rivers to a sport where athletes race against the clock - and each other.

Snowboard

Combining elements of surfing, skateboarding, and skiing, snowboarding made its Olympic debut at Nagano 1998.
